The Center for Design Optimization (CDO) is at the forefront of transforming engineering design. Our team pushes the boundaries of what is possible by leading the design and optimization of complex systems through a combination of detailed computer modeling, algorithm development, computational mechanics, and high performance computing (HPC). Our work leverages advanced manufacturing techniques to deliver high-quality design solutions for the nation’s challenges.
Who We Are
The CDO is the intellectual home for design optimization at LLNL, drawing from various areas of the Lab to coalesce expertise. The center solves design problems for clients through simulation, fabrication, and testing until a concept can be forwarded to production. These optimization techniques are revolutionizing the Lab’s design practices and being used to develop systems for multiple mission areas.
The CDO writes software to solve boutique design problems for our clients that involve engineering systems that exhibit nonlinear, dynamic, transient, multiscale, multiphysics, and uncertain behaviors. The tools we develop can solve enormous problems—up to a billion design variables—faster, and more efficiently than traditional approaches.

Our Approach
To maximize resources, our software uses existing LLNL libraries that have been extensively verified and validated, as well as parallelized to run on the most modern computing architecture. This allows clients to generate designs in a computationally efficient way while ensuring that the prototypes meet their specifications.
Our design formulations also leverage LLNL’s additive and advanced manufacturing capabilities in the Center for Engineered Materials and Manufacturing (CEMM), which can fabricate components with unique placements of holes, cavities, and channels to maximize system performance. This collaboration reduces product development time by ensuring the optimized designs can be readily fabricated.
